Synthesis Chemist - Technology Group Rheology & Clays

Responsibilities

 

The Synthesis Chemist is responsible for developing deep expertise in rheological additives through structured training, research, and project leadership. The role involves initial intensive training in Wesel, followed by relocation to Shanghai to support and eventually lead local and global R&D initiatives. This position contributes to building the Shanghai research hub, driving innovation in rheology, and fostering cross-cultural collaboration within BYK’s global technology network.

  • Complete comprehensive training within TG Rheology & Clays, focusing on the synthesis of organic rheology additives and application tests of rheology additives. Manage confidential technical data in a responsible way according to the company policy.
  • Build deep expertise in rheological testing methods and global R&D processes.
  • Conduct synthesis and application research under strategic guidance of the Wesel site.
  • Support global innovation and technology projects (“local for global”).
  • Contribute to establishing the Shanghai research hub.
  • Lead and execute projects aligned with local market needs (China, India) and global initiatives.
  • Drive collaboration with other BYK technology hubs worldwide.
  • Promote strong cross-cultural teamwork and knowledge exchange.

Requirements

 

  • Completed degree in Chemistry (Diploma or Master’s), followed by a PhD, with solid expertise in polymer chemistry, macromolecular chemistry, supramolecular chemistry, and/or organic chemistry;

•      +5 year working experience in chemistry related areas;

  • Solid chemistry background, skills on experiments design and operation;
  • Initial experience in rheology or rheology control is desirable;
  • Familiarity with workflows in preparative research laboratories;
  • Intercultural competence, ability to work in an international environment;
  • Fluent English, acceptable knowledge of German is an advantage;
  • Proficient in using standard software tools;
  • Strong team spirit, loyalty, reliability, and openness, especially across international locations.
  • Analytical thinking, independent and collaborative working style, and solution-oriented mindset.
  • Structured approach and a willingness to proactively share information.
