Manager - EHS

Your responsibilities

The primary function of the EH&S Manager is to ensure the plant's compliance with all local, state and Federal safety and industrial hygiene regulations and provide support to maintain an injury free workplace on a day-to-day basis. Additional responsibilities include environmental compliance and ensuring air, water and waste reporting to the appropriate authorities is completed in a timely and accurate fashion. including through the engagement of third-party consultants.

  • Develop appropriate plant-wide strategies to ensure effective implementation and management of all safety and industrial hygiene programs.
  • Develop and implement appropriate external and intra-company benchmarking measures to ensure that H&S best practices are established and followed. 

  • Evaluate current cultural approach to situational and behavioral aspects of H&S practice at the site and in concert with the Head of Operations and leadership team, affect a program to embed a ‘safety first’ approach to all site activities.  

  • Organize the safety committee to ensure that all functional areas are represented and members properly trained in their responsibilities. 

  • Ensure that a comprehensive H&S auditing and corrective action program is implemented to invlove all employees at the site. 

  • Promote and perform relevant safety training to cover all topics related to industrial operations. 

  • Become the company’s ‘scientific expert’ in safety matters specific to the site. This includes, but is not limited to: the properties of finely divided aluminum and attendant dust explosion hazards, the potential for the presence of combustible vapors in explosive concentrations, the hazards of rotating equipment, the hazards of molten aluminum, and the hazards of solvent exposure. 

  • Participate in Process Hazard and Operability studies (HAZOP) in conjunction with the Head of Operations, Production Manager, Technical Manager, Process Engineer, Maintenance and Engineering Manager, Corporate Engeineering and their respective teams. 

  • Identify and advise on process safety issues where either during the normal course of operation or process malfunction, a risk of accident or incident may exist. Particular attention and focus to an evaluation of risk, probability and consequences. 

  • Responsible for the proper management of waste and emissions on the site. 

  • Implement and manage environmental management programs to meet the ISO 14000 standard. Act as the Environmental Management System representative for the site. 

  • Responsible for all safety and environmental reporting. Represent the site with all local, state and federal officials on all matters concerning plant safety and environmental compliance. Manage all permits relevant to the operation of the site – Title V. 

  • Develop and manage the site emergency / evacuation procedure. 

  • Active member of the Altana USA EH&S Network and reports also to Eckart Germany corporate office on EH&S matters. 

  • Represent Eckart America on relevant trade and industry associations, in particular, the Aluminum Association Safety and Property Protection Committee.  

Your profile

  • Bachelor's degree - Chemistry or Chemical Engineering
  • Minimum of 5 to 7 years of experience in industrial Environmental compliance, Occupational Health and Safety.
  • 5+ years’ plant management experience supporting ERP in manufacturing, including inventory control and process documentation
  • Knowledge of explosion hazards and specific regulations is a distinct advantage.  
  • Previous working knowledge of ISO 14000 and/or ISO 9001 is not compulsory but is considered as significant advantage.  
  • In depth knowledge of OSHA, HAZMAT and DOT regulations. 
  • Strong organizational and problem solving skills  
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with demonstrated ability to interact effectively with individuals at all levels in the organization. Previous safety training experience is necessary. 
  • Ability to conceive, communicate and implement EHS best practice
  • 5 days a week in-office
